What Is Hydroponics and Why It Represents the Future of Modern Agriculture

Hydroponics is much more than an alternative cultivation method. It is a complete production technology that enables growers to control nearly every factor influencing plant development. At a time when production costs are increasing, natural resources are becoming more limited, and market demands continue to grow, hydroponics has emerged as one of the most significant advances in modern agriculture.

Although many consider it a relatively new technology, hydroponic cultivation has been used commercially for more than 50 years. Today, it is widely adopted in some of the world’s most advanced greenhouse industries, including the Netherlands, Spain, Canada, Israel, and increasingly throughout the Mediterranean region.

What is Hydroponics?

Hydroponics is the cultivation of plants without soil. Instead of growing in the ground, plant roots develop in inert growing media such as stone wool or coco coir, while all essential nutrients are delivered through a precisely managed nutrient solution.

Unlike soil cultivation, where plant growth depends heavily on the physical and chemical characteristics of the soil, hydroponics allows the grower to accurately manage:

  • Plant nutrition

  • pH

  • Electrical Conductivity (EC)

  • Irrigation

  • Root-zone oxygenation

  • The overall root environment

This level of control results in greater crop uniformity, improved yields, and consistently higher product quality.

The Importance of Growing Media

Growing media do not provide nutrients to the plant. Their primary function is to maintain the ideal balance between water and air while supporting healthy root development.

Stone wool is widely recognized for its outstanding uniformity and precision in water management, making it the preferred substrate in many high-tech greenhouse operations.

Coco coir, on the other hand, is a natural substrate offering excellent water-holding capacity, high porosity, and vigorous root development. The quality and consistency of the raw material are essential factors for achieving reliable crop performance.

Ultimately, selecting the appropriate growing medium, combined with a well-designed irrigation strategy, forms the foundation of every successful hydroponic crop.

Why Are More Growers Choosing Hydroponics?

Hydroponics is not a miracle solution. However, it provides growers with production tools that are difficult to achieve under conventional soil cultivation.

Its main advantages include:

  • Higher and more consistent yields

  • Improved water and fertilizer use efficiency

  • Reduced pressure from soil-borne diseases

  • Greater crop uniformity

  • Better control of plant growth

  • Consistent production of premium-quality vegetables throughout the growing season

Furthermore, precise irrigation and fertigation management significantly reduce nutrient losses and water consumption, making hydroponics particularly valuable in regions facing increasing water scarcity.

Hydroponics in Greece

Greece currently has approximately 75,000 stremmas (7,500 hectares) of greenhouse cultivation, with the island of Crete representing the country’s largest greenhouse production region, accounting for more than 23,000 stremmas (2,300 hectares).

Although hydroponics still occupies only a relatively small percentage of the total greenhouse area, its importance continues to grow rapidly. According to a recent study by the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research (IOBE), Greece currently operates approximately 1,350 stremmas (135 hectares) of modern high-tech hydroponic greenhouses, with considerable potential for expansion over the coming years.

The same study concludes that expanding soilless greenhouse cultivation could generate substantial added value for the Greek economy, create thousands of new jobs in rural areas, and significantly strengthen the export potential of Greek fresh vegetables.

Greece enjoys several unique competitive advantages:

  • More than 2,700 hours of sunshine annually in many regions.

  • Mild winters.

  • A long growing season.

  • Extensive expertise in protected vegetable production.

These advantages enable Greek growers to produce premium-quality vegetables with lower energy requirements compared to many Northern European countries.

Hydroponics Across the Mediterranean

Hydroponics has experienced remarkable growth throughout the Mediterranean basin during the past decade. Spain, Turkey, Egypt, Morocco, and Greece continue to invest heavily in modern greenhouse infrastructure as the need for water conservation, increased productivity, and consistent product quality becomes increasingly important.

Climate change, rising production costs, and stricter environmental regulations are accelerating this transition. Today, competitiveness is no longer determined solely by production volume, but by the ability to produce consistently, efficiently, sustainably, and with lower production costs per kilogram.

Final Thoughts

In my opinion, hydroponics is no longer a technology of the future—it is the present of professional greenhouse horticulture.

The Mediterranean possesses all the natural advantages needed to become one of the world’s leading regions for high-quality vegetable production. To fully realize this potential, investment is required not only in modern greenhouse infrastructure but, more importantly, in technical knowledge, professional support, and high-quality growing media.

I firmly believe that the growers who invest today in hydroponic technology and continuous education will be the leaders of tomorrow’s agriculture. Hydroponics is not simply a different cultivation technique—it represents a new production philosophy built on precision, efficiency, sustainability, and long-term profitability.
